Cape Town Society for the Blind (CTSB)

was founded in 1929 by a group of women from Cape Town who identified the need to provide training and employment opportunities for Blind and Visually Impaired Persons within a secure and supportive environment.

The Society has remained true to its mission and vision for over 90 years and has become a beacon of hope to individuals who need to navigate the complex world without sight.

The overall aim of the CTSB is to uplift Blind and Visually Impaired Persons through education, access to assistive resources and career development programmes in an honest, ethical, and caring environment.

people are unemployed. The Cape Town society for the Blind
offer blind and visually impaired adults training
and employment opportunities.
This is the story of two men, Colin Willemse & Andre Timotheuse,
who found new self-worth and camaraderie at CTSB by coming
to work everyday, doing a job they love, and learning new skills
that puts a smile on their faces.

Frankcheska Nicole Witbooi 2022Frankcheska Nicole WitbooiTo date, she is most proud of her woven cane trays.
Lynette van Niekerk, CTSB cane mentor and facilitator,
says that Frankcheska has come a long way but has finally
mastered her tray weaving skills.
Frankcheska proudly stated that “Coming to the Society was
the best decision I ever made as I know I can live my best
life and just be myself without being judged.
This (CTSB) makes me feel at home, I truly love being here.”

Avril Davids 2022Avril DavidsAvril Davids is one of our most valuable facilitators. She
facilitates Braille and re-caning to the students amongst many
other things. Avril was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at
the age of 25.
Avril is thankful to CTSB for making the process easy
and always having her best interest at heart.

cole claasen 2022Cole ClaassenCole Jade Claassen is a 20-year-old cane weaving prodigy
at Cape Town Society for the Blind. Cole is a young, dynamic
individual who started his training at CTSB on 6th April 2021
under the watchful eye of his mentor and teacher.
Cole says, “I love weaving and creating items that are sturdy
and tightly woven. It is important that the correct cane pattern
is used and that everything I make just looks beautiful.
I am proud of myself.”
