Basic steps of skills development

CTSB’s Skills Development Entry-Exit Programme consists of four primary steps

Step 1 – Assessment & Basic Life Skills
Each learner is assessed for potential talents and abilities. Basic competency training follows.

Step 2 – Preparing Career Goals
After assessment and basic Life Skills Training achieved – preparation guidance for career goals is set for their chosen career path.

Step 3 – Skills Development
The learner then embarks upon a series of skills development courses that will provide him/her with the necessary skills to achieve set goals.

Step 4 – Employment
CTSB ensures that every learner trained is able to become financially self-sufficient.

Employer
CTSB provides a professional job placement service for the selection of suitable candidates.
All candidates are thoroughly screened by a Professional Placement Officer and equipped with comprehensive CV’s.
All candidates are professionally prepared for each interview.
Upon confirmation of successful employ the Placement Officer assists with finalisation of contracts, including the induction of the candidate at the workplace.

Training and Development

CTSB’s main objective is to equip Blind and Visually Impaired Persons with relevant skills in order that they might enjoy full economic and social independence. To this end, CTSB offers a number of training courses which are described in greater detail below.

CTSB Introduces a new course: SMART DIGI TRAINING

CTSB is excited to start a new training program: Smart Digi Training. This course provides our beneficiaries with an insight into the numerous assistive devices and technology that will assist visually impaired people in their daily working and personal lives. The assistive devices and technology that will be covered will range from text to speech programs such as NVDA, to magnification devices such as the Prodigi and refresh-able braille devices. Training will also include how to effectively use smart devices such as Apple and Android products.

We believe that this training will expose our beneficiaries to the different smart devices and technology out in the open labour market and give them confidence to work with them

 

This course is compulsory for all our learners. Life Skills Training concentrates on self-development and provides the learner with the ability to live more independently and become more self-reliant. Time and Location: Daily from 09h00-15h00 at CTSB, 45 Salt River Road, Salt River

Qualification: Learners receive a certificate of completion from CTSB.

Using special software, learners are taught the layout of the entire keyboard and learn how to touch type. Learners are introduced to the components of the computer and basic navigation and file management. A skills assessment will take place to ascertain the capability of the learner to use computers. This will determine the readiness of the learner to continue with the International Computer Driver’s License (ICDL) course.

This International Computer Driver’s License certified course equips the learner with the basic computer skills required in the job market.

Qualification: Upon successful completion of this course and by passing the required exam, the learner will receive an internationally recognised Start ICDL certificate.

This course is ICDL-certified and provides the learner with an advanced level of proficiency within standard Microsoft Office applications.

Qualification: Upon successful completion of this course and by passing the required exam, the learner will receive an internationally recognised Core ICDL certificate.

This is a computer literacy course which is SAQA accredited at NQF level 3 (130 credits) and is also accredited with MICT Seta. This course provides the learner with the ability to operate a computer as well as use standard office software (such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and applications.

This course provides the learner with office administration skills that will enable them to apply for a range of frontline and administrative positions within the corporate sector.

Given the individual nature of training provided to students, small classes of four to five students are held. Students are rotated through various aspects of the cane weaving process, depending on their ability.

In the Advanced course, participants are taught to master more challenging cane weaving skills, such as furniture repair.

Qualification: Learners receive a certificate of completion from the CTSB and an opportunity to develop their own small business unit.

Ideal for those who enjoy creating beautiful crafts, this course equips the learner with the skills necessary to weave woollen and fabric products using a loom. Upon completion of this course, the learner can be placed as a small business unit in the weaving department at CTSB.

Qualification: Learners receive a certificate of attendance from CTSB.

We offer training that is safe, efficient, and effective to people of all ages. We assist with pre-cane skills, long cane techniques, orientation on the use of features, landmarks and road crossing techniques, low vision assessment and skills of daily living.

We offer this training for blind and visually impaired adults to assist them in the part time or full time income generation. The course consists of how to repair the backs and seat of chairs. Duration period is 4 months.

We offer Braille training to older children, adolescents and adults who have lost their vision after learning to read. We train them to become Braille literate which will assist them to read and write. We offer the course in Uncontracted Braille and Contracted Braille. Duration period is 6months.

Cape Town Society for the Blind offers Barista training in partnership with TRUTH coffee and includes the following:

2 week Initial intensive training
a) Coffee theory
b) Techniques and brew methods
c) Ongoing quality control
d) Hygiene

6 month follow-up refresher training
a) Techniques and brew methods
b) Quality control
c) Hygiene
d) Updated, relevant coffee theory
e) Cleaning and looking after equipment (includes minor servicing)
f) Advanced senior barista training (optional/selective)
g) Coffee training for managers & waiters (optional/selective)
