Avril Davids is one of our most valuable facilitators. She facilitates Braille and re-caning to the students amongst many other things. Avril was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at the age of 25. She has lived a full life and has gained skills that many do not have. Avril was the first client to be assessed in the Low Vision Clinic (LVC) when it first opened. To our surprise, the optometrist diagnosed her with cataracts. Luckily, with the assistance of the rehab team, Avril was able to learn about her diagnosis and how to manage it through education and guidance.

She was also assessed for low vision aids and now uses a handheld dome magnifier to assist her in completing her daily tasks.

She was referred to Groote Schuur Hospital for a cataract-removal surgery. Within two days of her consultation, surgery was done on her left eye and is now eagerly awaiting her follow-up appointment for the other eye. Currently, Avril is in recovery and is experiencing improvement in her vision already. She is thankful to CTSB for making the process easy and always having her best interest at heart.
